The Opencast community is a collaboration of individuals, higher education institutions and organizations working together to explore, develop, define and document best practices and technologies for management of audiovisual content in academia.

Opencast is an open source lecture capture and video management system which allows institutions to capture, process, manage and distribute video assets on a large scale. It plays with relevant academic systems and services and provides flexibility to meet the diversity of video management requirements we see today.
Schedule
Schedule events to automatically record based on a pre-defined timetable or syllabus and capture multiple sources (video, presentation etc.).
Edit
Bulk edit and trim video recordings. The editor provides graphical visualization of elements such as audio can significantly reduce editing time.
Process
A scalable infrastructure to encode video, generate metadata and preview images, create captioning and bulk edit to support video processing at scale.
Distribute
Publish recordings for download or on-demand viewing via YouTube, RSS, Atom-feeds or with OAI-PMH.
Playback
The media player is a standalone application or embedded on blogs, wikis or a content management system.
Manage
A robust dashboard to manage, configure and track the status and performance of video content and distribution channels.

Conclusion of the 2019/2020 Crowdfunding Campaign
University of Graz, TU Wien, Ghent University, and The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology have completed the 2019/2020 crowdfunding campaign.
Opencast 9 Release on December 15
Opencast 9 is planned for release on December 15. It brings a number of new features and stability improvements.
Opencast 8.9 and 7.9 Released
Opencast 8.9 and 7.9 were both released recently. These point releases contained a small number of bug fixes, as well as important security fixes. If you are running these versions, please upgrade ASAP!
Opencast 8.7 Released
This latest maintenance release includes 11 patches. The most important ones are regarding the scheduler and multi-tenant setups.
Opencast 9 Feature Freeze
Originally planned to be released on June 15th, Opencast 9 was unfortunately delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Meeting of the German-speaking Community
Instead of gathering in lovely Innsbruck, Austria, the German-speaking community used BigBlueButton to hold their annual meeting this year.
Tobira: A Video Portal for Higher Education Institutions
Development on Tobia, a new video portal for Opencast, has begun.
BigBlueButton Integration
The ELAN e.V. has developed an integration between both tools, allowing recorded BigBlueButton events to be processed in Opencast.
Zoom Integration
ETH Zürich has funded development of a Zoom integration for Opencast. This will enable automated, and manual ingestion of Zoom cloud recordings into Opencast. This will be publicly released likely by the end of October. Watch the Opencast Users list for more details!

Now a new chapter editor allows for manual creation and editing of chapter markers and titles.
Opencast Webinars in Review
The community organized and hosted a number of technical webinars for both entry level and advanced technical people, with a wide range of topics (Opencast Studio, GPU encoding, LDAP etc.) covered.

This year’s meeting is being hosted by the Münster University , Germany. It takes place on September 12 and 13, 2019 and is free to attend.
